EVENT: Peaches (DJ SET) @ Capitol Nightclub,16 September 2009, (Knowledge Music)
August 22, 2009, 1:57 pm
Filed under: Event, Music, Perth | Tags: , ,

Artist: Peaches ( DJ SET)

Support: Cutter + Shannon Fox, Petrosex + Bad Weather

Venue: Capitol Nightclub

Cost: $30 + BF

Tickets: Moshtix, Bocs Ticketing, Planet Video, Mills Records and 78 Records

“Peaches swings this way to the beat of a DJ with a quick stint of her euroslick DJ shows… in a sweatsoaked electro-rock tussle amid sheets of Peaches madness she lets loose a howl of a groove. Reknowned for her remix and production prowess… for the first time Australia bears witness to a tour of DJ mayhem in a sizzling mixture of electro, hip-hop and rock as presented by Peaches. I feel sweat!

Peaches (Merrill Nisker) burst into transcontinental favor with her very particular brand of cock-sure rapping and spurting groovebox beats. Indeed, this vulgar Canadian temptress may have come from an underground womb of acoustic folk (Mermaid Café), avant jazz (Fancypants Hoodlum), and deconstructed noise swarms (the Shit), but it wasn’t until 2000’s new guise that her fearless, apolitical gender-play truly raised heads.

European trawls unearthed new admirers, and collaborations with the equally lewd Chilly Gonzales certainly fueled the fire for her first solo effort. By the time she signed onto Berlin’s Kitty-Yo label and unleashed The Teaches of Peaches, her niche had already been carved out. Peaches simultaneously sounded like a Penthouse Forum and Grandmaster Flash, Shirley Manson, and Charles Manson — or just Justine Frischmann hitting her sexual peak. Peaches moved to XL, which reissued The Teaches of Peaches in 2002, and released Fatherfucker in 2003 and Impeach My Bush in 2006. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide.”

REVIEW: MIKIX THE CAT (ICSSC)

Mikix CorrectedThis was an awesome night for all those who braved the weather to be outside at The Court. I caught the end of Bad Weather’s set, and heard Alan Braxe – Addicted, so my night started really well! Then when Future Frog hit the decks there was a cool mix of old and new including Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just want to have fun, Major Lazer – Zumbi, and Fever Ray – triangle walks (remix?). Then what was promised was delivered, a heavy bass night! Mikix played a two hour set of full bass, I didn’t know the tracks, although I’m sure he played his own track Movin’ Around and his remix of Stereoheroes – Washout, but other than that it was just the best beat all night long. The crowd went strong for nearly the whole set only fading away around 1, then Hickey got up and kept the crowd going, but I went home because I’m soft! haha good night.

Sleater Brockman Corrected

Tomorrow night at SHAPE, Shazam and Shazam’s manager, Sleater Brockman are playing together for the first time ever in Perth. Be prepared for a night of absolute mayhem, where you’ll hear rap, dancehall, house, dubstep and anything else thrown in there for fun, so get ready for a trademark Sleater Brockman set, and before you do go you’ve been lucky enough to get a full interview with Sleater Brockman, it’s a pretty lengthy interview for perthquake but it has some cool responses in there that are definitely worth reading about!

Sleater Brockman (Myspace)

Two standard questions; Who or what got you interested in djing?

I was the typical teenager obsessed with music. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Sydney, there was this amazing record store called Discovery Records in Hornsby where I would spend (more…)

EVENT: Jody Wisternoff @ Shape, Saturday 22 August, 2009

Filed under: Event, Music, Perth | Tags: , ,

wisternoffWhen: Sat August 22nd

Where: Shape

Cost: $20/$15(members) or $15 through the website

Who: Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West);

Upstairs Support: Flex, Kyran Smith, Luke Reti, Richard Lee

Downstairs Acts: Sleater Brockman, Shazam, Bad Weather, Kit Pop, Clouds

This guy has had a varied career and he has been in it for a while. In 1986 at the age of 13 he broke through to the DMC Hip Hop finals. In the early 90’s he was playing hardcore with his act Sub Love. In 94’ he teamed up with Nick Warren to form Way Out West a pretty big act in Progressive house circles, and the body of work he is best known for. The production duo have released four studio albums and released countless remixes. They even toured for their 2004 album “Don’t Look Now” with a 5 piece band. Way out west have a new album due for release later this year so one would expect a few tastes of that in his set. His solo stuff has more of a nu disco feel to it, so there will probably be some of that too.

I have listened to a few of his most recent podcasts (Jody Wisternoff way out there – found on itunes or through his myspace) and they are a good way to get a picture of some of his influences. Its always melodic and light (as compared to dark), there funky and disco bits, other times it melodic house or progressive with some breaks thrown in for good measure. I must say I almost don’t know what to expect, but going in without expectations is often conducive to a fun night.

You can find an interview with Jody here

Right, so I just heard VIGILANTE NECK TIE PARTY, the new LP from SCOTCH OF ST JAMES and I’m glad.  I’m glad because there’s no more mystery as to where I’ll be this Saturday.  I’ll be at AMPS seeing these tracks roll out in the musical flesh.

Local n loud these lads have created a commanding mix of roll and rock that invites you to the party from track one (SQUARE EYES). VIGILANTE NECK TIE PARTY is a persuasive blend of jaunty grooves and dirty guitar runs to please both the rational rock bystander and those sweaty kids down front near the stage.

The triple j featured BLUE PLASTIC SPOON is the tip of the iceberg on what I think is collection of songs that will more than suit ‘our’ AMPLIFIER.  Saturday will be a loud evening.

AC Slater Correct

After much anticipation and a somewhat late arrival I entered the Ambar underground to Philly selflessly warming up the crowd, once again demonstrating his versatility and ability to create the right vibe before the main act AC Slater. Taking over with an eclectic mix of bad arse bass, effortlessly combining electro, breakbeats and more than a healthy dose of dubstep. Apart from a few confused looks as the tempo so constantly changed, the majority of the were crowd lapping it up and loving every minute. With hometown hero Micah taking over, he stepped up to the plate to deliver a fitting fusion of electro, breaks and dubstep winning the ambar massive over as only he knows how. As the crowd slowly filtered away Mono Lisa entertained with her energetic, captivating style providing the sounds for the remaining punters who hadn’t had enough dancefloor action. So all in all, another great night at Ambar with a good display from the locals, and an intense set from the Brooklyn badboy of bass seeing everyone attending leaving satisfied and smiling.

Yet another really cool remix has come from Alex Darkly (Heads Will Roll), I think this is my favourite so far. And you will hear me play it out from now on. It’s good to see there are perth productionists working tirelessly on new tracks and trying to bring up Perth’s profile as having some top quality djs, who also do production. We all know we have many good djs already, just go to any of the events posted on Perthquake and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Hardworking brother and sister duo Jaymes and Tegan Voltaire are ready for the launch of their D.I.L. I saw them last time they played republic, and there was a fair sized crowed getting their groove on to some well known Voltaire Twins tracks. I think the best part is, each time they perform there are new little tweaks and changes to tracks to make them even better than I previously thought.

REVIEW: KID MASSIVE @ METROS (FREO), 14 AUGUST, 2009 (LIMELITE)
August 15, 2009, 5:27 pm
Filed under: Event, Music, Perth | Tags: , , ,

Limelite put on another pretty large night last night, with a few hundred people being in before the main act started and a consistently busy dancefloor. I was really impressed with Matt Nugents song selection, going between some MSTRKRFT- Heartbreaker (Laidback Luke remix), Daft Punk – One More time, and a really neat remix of Basement Jaxx’s Raindrops by Funkagenda and Paul Thomas. Then when Kid Massive stepped up it became a pretty large set of house music made for all night dancing and I heard the only two Kid Massive tracks I know, Get Busy and his remix of Sweet Dreams. Although he did play Calabria, and that’s always good for a laugh and Hey Boy Hey Girl, which I haven’t heard in a very long time, so it was a pretty enjoyable time, considering I know almost nothing about house music.

“Trance has a new name, and it’s spelt tyDi.
As a 21 year-old DJ he was voted #1 in Australia, and subsequently he spent 2008 touring in support of dance heavyweights Tiesto, Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. He was a regular on the Australian festival circuit and the wunderkid ended the year with a bang by co-headlining Melbourne’s Sensation NYE party with Fedde le Grand.

As a producer, his tracks have been signed to labels across the globe, including world #1 DJ Armin van Buuren’s own label, Armada. tyDi has produced soundtracks for some of the hard-hitting government advertising, video games and luxury property developments.

Late in 2008, tyDi hit the studio to produce his debut release. Moving away from his traditional roots, he has teamed up with ARIA nominated producer Sameer Sengupta, whose work includes credits for artists such as Paul Mac, Sneaky Sound System and The Potbelleez.

In 2009, tyDi has already been off to an impressive start. On the back of a stellar performance at Melbourne’s Sensation NYE party, the young maverick has secured Main Stage billing at Trance Energy in Holland. In April, he released his debut artist album ‘Look Closer’ which made an impressive debut on the Australian Independent Recording Charts, ARIA Dance Charts and on the international Beatport charts. The first single ‘Foolish’ also found a home in the top ten of the international Beatport charts. With such a solid start to a promising career, Australia’s #1 DJ is a man on the rise.”

Hickey

He’s playing at The Bump tomorrow night and he’s been running events in Perth for over a year now, and I’m sure most of you have heard him Dj or at least heard of him, that’s right I’m talking about that loveable guy Hickey. Well I caught up with him and found out why he started running events, what got him into djing in the first place (it’s a pretty cliched response, he’s right), and the exact number of Xs in JukeBoxxx!

Hickey (Myspace)

Hey Hickey, something I’ve always been curious about is your Dj name, why Hickey? Any special reason, or just because it’s a good Dj name?

I used to write it in big thick pink marker pen on walls everywhere. Lucious baby pink drippin’ On dirty grey staircases in rubbish hostels in Europe. lol. But yeah, it was just a word i liked to write, and (more…)

REVIEW: DJ BENZI @ THE MANOR, 7 AUGUST, 2009 (BLENDER)
August 10, 2009, 11:16 pm
Filed under: Music, Perth | Tags: , ,

It’s always good when someone makes you question your taste in music. It can be painful at times, often it can lead to admitting that you were wrong about a genre or artist and the result is a new found appreciation for music you may have never learnt to enjoy. I can’t say that I’m going to be listening to any more Black Eyed Peas or Lady GaGa than I used to (not a whole lot) after Friday night, but if next to the title, there happens to be some brackets that have DJ Benzi’s name between them, you can be sure it’s gonna feature heavily on my playlist.

I arrived at the Manor in time to catch a good chunk of Kit Pop and Taku who were taking turns on the decks before the headliner. These two never disappoint, if you’re not up on the Paper Chain People collective that these two are a part of, you should stop reading this and head over to their blog and show them some love - then come back and finish reading this.

Benzi took to the decks around 12, and for the next roughly 2 and a half hours proceeded to show us why he’s collaborated on mix tapes with everyone from Lil Wayne to Diplo! His mixing was on point and ridiculously quick, he worked through a stupid amount of music during his set, never letting it get boring or tired. His tune selection was much like his mix tapes, plenty of Southern Rap mixed in with Mad Decent style Club Music which the crowd was exceptionally receptive to. At some points it seemed like just about everyone was on the dance floor, there definitely wasn’t a stiff neck in the place.

Blender made a great move bringing Benzi over, it would have been nice if a few more people had made it to the Manor to listen, but this being his first time to Australia and the whole Dirty South Hip Hop movement having not really taken off in Perth a smaller crowd was to be expected. Never the less it was an awesome event, and everyone who made it and hung around for the whole night definitely did not go home disappointed.

DJ Benzi’s Site (plenty of mixtapes, tunes and info for those that missed out)

We’ve only just had his producer visit (Yuksek review) and now we get another great French artist, Brodinski. Stepping away from the current French electro sound and often sounding more like he’s from Berlin has gained Brodinski a large amount of attention. I think the video at the top is a good indication of what I’m talking about (it’s out soon), and it’s hilarious to watch. And you can also download the teaser below. MUSIC: BEST TRACKS OF THE MONTH, JULY
August 5, 2009, 8:49 pm

A month has flown by! We’re up to our second ‘Best Of’ series, and we might not offer you the newest music all the time, but we hope to impress you with some tracks you might not have listen to closely or haven’t heard of at all. Make sure you spend a little bit of time on this post checking out these tracks, it’s a good way to get out of work/uni. I’m going to add my two cents to this post and point out an awesome Trevor Loveys‘ Remix and one of my favourite tracks showing either the talent or cheek of Daft Punk.

Today The Moon, Tomorrow The Sun – Always (Trevor Loveys Remix) (128 Kbps)

And regular JackAttack suggests these… An old Italo-disco track from 1982; The System – It’s Passion

And a Kate Bush cover, I really like the Placebo cover of this song, and haven’t listened to this one too much so let me know what you think.

Kate Bush – Running Up That Hill (Chromatics Cover) (128 Kbps)

Work Experience Djs have offered up some tracks I like too, and one half of Work Experience Djs is also the man behind Heads Will Roll, your favourite music info blog! (Or equal if you enjoy Perthquake). We’ll start with Jeffer by Boys Noize, can this guy do no wrong?! I love the new tracks of his, and then a Hey Today! remix, and I really enjoy listening to anything by them at the moment, and of course this is no exception.

Zombie Nation – Radio Controlled (Hey Today! Remix) (128 Kbps)

And finally Dj Rohan Smith, a minimal dj often found playing at Habitat, who played a perfect set last Saturday night (these may or may not have been words that he used to describe the set…), so keep your eyes out for any future gigs he plays.  First up is Hopp Hopp (einzelkind remix) by Nima Gorji.

And finally I Lost My Brain At Wrinchout (Barem Remix) by Mark Henning

MUSIC: AC SLATER INTERVIEW

Playing on the 14th at Ambar (event info here), is AC Slater, a man who makes some of the most heavy electro out, and he shares his name with one of the characters from Saved By The Bell, which makes for an amusing story in the interview.  (And an excuse for me to learn more about 90s tv, and post amusing videos, too bad they added that music to it). If you want to know more about AC Slater’s production career and dj insights then read the full interview after the jump… And you can listen to BanGer while you do it, to prepare yourself to ’smash it’ with AC Slater!!!

Hey AC Slater, thanks for taking the time to do an interview with Perthquake. Okay I have to get this out of the way first… I’ve known about Saved By The Bell, but I was too young to appreciate it, so I did some wikipedia and youtube research, on the other not so real, AC Slater…Is your dj name based on his character? Are you a great wrestler?!

People used to call me by my initials, AC. When I got my first (more…)

Artist: Don Diablo

Support: Limelite Elite

Venue: Metros (Freo)

Cost: TBA

Tickets: TBA

This guy is growing in popularity worldwide after local Dutch folk have known about the talent of this producer, dj, blogger, remixer (and fashion icon???). He uses 4 decks in a dj set, not that it’s a guarantee of quality but it requires some serious coordination to have 4 going at one time! And he’s a humanitarian, working with a UN-supported campaign to fight back against HIV and AIDS. And there is nothing like a video clip that includes a riot, dancing women and some form of super freak muscle men!

Don Diablo & Example – Hooligans (A1 Bassline Remix) (128 Kbps)

Don Diablo – Song for MJ (Remember The Time) (128 Kbps)

Yeah these guys are from Reading, my family’s home town, I probably shouldn’t admit that my family lived near reading but obviously I don’t mind. The top track We Are Rockstars, is about my favourite track of 2008, I didn’t find it early or anything like that, it was on the radio one day, and I fell in love…

Founder of Heaps Decent, sister label to Mad Decent, and working along side Diplo, M.I.A., Spankrock and Radioclit, and playing alongside Muscles, Catcall and Yo! Majesty, Sleater Brockman is an act with an impressive background, and to make the show even better is his Perth pal Shazam. The interview above is pretty cool, I don’t have cable so have no idea about this Vera Vee lady, but it’s pretty cool, even if it’s completely made up.

BIRDS OF PEACE AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

Wrapping up another sold out Australian tour here in our lovely Perth, UK boys DOVES surely delivered what the punters sought at a capacity capitol last night.  The shoulder to shoulder crowd was no doubt well warmed and salivating after a the unanticipated ambush of harmonies and gentle but elevating multi instrumental teamwork provided by Townsville newcomers THE MIDDLE EAST.
