Before you go to Easy Tiger (at SHAPE, starts at ten, 15 on the door) tonight there is one thing you need to do, read the interview with one half of Classixx, Tyler Blake. I’ve really got into Classixx over the past few weeks, and have really been enjoying their music, and there film clips
. I’ll cya all at Easy Tiger tonight, don’t forget we’re also lucky enough to have Toy Selectah play, and a whole host of local talent. Full interview after the jump, and follow the link to their myspace to get their latest mixtape.
Hey Classixx, Okay I always ask this question in my interviews and I¹m not going to stop now, how did you get into producing music?
We grew up playing in bands but always admired great production. We both had Protools rigs to make demos for our bands after our bands broke up we got a chance to remix a few bands Mike had toured with and got a lot of practice that way. There is still so much to learn but I think we’ve always looked up to legendary guys like Brian Eno and Quincy Jones just as much as the artists they produced.
And looking at the Cold Act Ill video, were you guys really into skating as kids?! Are you still, or was it just the plain awesome ness of the tricks being performed?
Skating was actually my whole life growing up. Michael wasn’t too into it when we were kids but somehow or another he came across some footage of Rodney Mullen and some of those old Powell Peralta videos like Bones Brigade. He really enjoyed em and came up with the idea of doing a video based on old school skate footage. I loved the idea. I actually recently picked up skating again and try to do it as much as possible.
What have you been working on recently? I see a few forthcoming remixes on your myspace, but how long ’til a full length?
Yeah, we are working on all those remixes on our Myspace but also a lot of original material. Hopefully some of the original stuff will turn into a full length or at least an Ep soon.
And Any more music videos being made to go with any tracks your making, I love the I¹ll Get You clip, I¹ve been watching it over and over and over on youtube.
We’re both huge fans of music videos and music video directors. There’s been nights where we’d plan on going to a show or something and ended up just watching video clips all night instead. We’ve talked to a lot of talented friends about making music videos for us in the future and we’re excited about it. There will definitely be more.
And whatever you make do you see your music taking any particular direction? Cold Act Ill seems pretty different to tracks like I’ll Get You, so do you also think your sound has changed over the last couple of years? Am I imagining things?
I think we have a much better idea of who we are now. We’re still learning and probably always will be but we want to be able to make all different kinds of tracks without putting ourselves in a corner.
Can we have a hint of what to expect from your live show? Other than heaps of crazy indie-electro kids dancing?
Our mixtapes are pretty representative of the way we DJ. We try to play stuff that is interesting to us but won’t confuse people to much. We try to play tastefully but we care more about giving people a good time then educating them.
And have the Aus kids in Melbourne partied as hard to your tracks as your home crowds in LA?
Totally, Melbourne was great. I think the kids here have been exposed to all kinds of dance music for much longer than kids in L.A. so they were pretty receptive, even to the weirder stuff.
And what’s the indie-electro scene like there in general? I¹m presuming there¹s a pretty popular and productive scene happening in LA?
Its growing, which is good because the young kids are inspired to make music. We hear new, promising stuff from kids all of the time. The scene will continue to grow and will be much larger and segmented in the years to come.
Tyler
Thanks for the interview
